Our Clients
Kelter Center students attend private and public schools or are home schooled. They are in gifted programs, regular education classrooms
and special education programs within their schools.
Since 1977, we have worked with hundreds of students who are experiencing difficulties acquiring basic literacy skills
(reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, vocabulary) and mathematics skills. Our students are of average to above
average intelligence, who have not acquired these basic academic tools. We teach our students how to become independent,
thoughtful learners. Our students range in age from six years to adults.
Our clients are referred to us from a variety of sources: satisfied parents of our students, neuro-psychologists and psychologists,
occupational therapists and speech and language therapists, public and private school administrators and teachers. We work closely
with other professionals to provide a balanced, supportive learning experience for our students.
Some of our students have diagnostic labels such as gifted learners, learning disabled students, students with attention deficit disorder,
high functioning autistic or Asberger's Syndrome. We prefer to describe each client's unique profile of learning strengths and weaknesses.
We respectfully label all our students, "learners".
When a family comes to us with eductional concerns, The Kelter Center's approach is different than other educational
therapy facilities and tutors.
We begin our work by investigating each student's academic and "learning to learn" skills. Our educational evaluation dictates
and orders each student's learning/educational programming choices.
Getting Started at The Kelter Center
Initial Consultation
An initial consultation can be scheduled by calling the Kelter Center.
During this initial consultation we discuss with the parents their concerns and review previous test results,
The Kelter Center programs are explained and recommendations for further testing or program selection are considered.
Assessment
Our testing battery consists of individualized, standardized educational tests. The assessment reveals the student's skills in reading,
spelling, writing and mathematics, as well as the processing skills that support the academic skills. We determine which skills a student knows,
what they confuse and what they do not know. A written report describes the student's performance. Specific educational goals and programs to
meet those goals are clearly stated. This written report is presented orally to the parents.
