The Kelter Center Summer Programs, 2010
Summer Afternoons
June, July and August
If you have a vacation planned during the Summer Intensive weeks, or have other plans for morning activities, afternoons are an opportunity for us to
work with your child and the times can be organized for sessions that fit your schedule.
Summer Educational Therapy provides your child with practice
in areas they have difficulty with at school, as well as preparing them for the increased demands of the next grade level: it empowers your student with
improved skills and confidence.
Afternoon sessions in the PACE Program and the Cogmed Program can also be scheduled throughout the summer months.
Summer Intensive Program
June 28, August 6, 2010
A three-hour day, six-week program designed to maximize students' learning during the summer break. Each day is made of two 1 1/2hour sessions.
During a short break, a light snack and games are provided. Each student works with two educational therapists who coordinate and orchestrate a unique
learning experience for each student, focusing on reducing the gap between the student's current skills in reading, spelling, fluency, reading comprehension,
writing or mathematics and grade level expectations. Each student's program will be clearly defined with observable goals so that he/she will begin to close
the gap between where they are now and where they need to be to be most successful in school.

Writing Clinic Teaching the Craft of Writing
The Kelter Center Writing Clinic is a small class specially designed for students preparing for middle school.
Who needs this class?
the student who is working in an accelerated, academically demanding school
the student of average to above average intelligence who struggles to acquire academic skills
the student with attention challenges who has missed some basic instruction
the average learner who wishes to strengthen and amplify his or her skills
Parents say:
"My daughter has excellent ideas when she answers a question in class, but she can't organize her ideas and write them down when for a
class assignment or test."
"Why do I have to bribe my son to write a book report?"
Writing is the most challenging task in school.
A writer must know how to:
Think of ideas and use academic language
Organize ideas so they reflect in-depth analysis of ideas
Create complete and varied sentences
Use appropriate punctuation and capitalization
Write essays differently than stories
Edit and revise written work thoughtfully
Teachers expect their students to efficiently use all of these skills, but some students just don't know how and when to apply these
skills or may not have understood what was taught.
During the Writing Clinic we teach these skills actively and thoughtfully, with enough practice so that the students "get it".
This class develops sophisticated written expression skills.
Each Writing Clinic meets for two hours in the afternoon, Monday through Thursday, for three consecutive weeks.

Building Your Toolbox teaches the basic tools for expository writing
at the sentence and paragraph level.
Week 2
